Of course the past can be a rich treasure trove of great experience, people and memories, but it can also trap us in an ever more deepening whole of regret, pain and negative emotions if we allow ourselves to keep going over old ground.
The benefits of learning from our mistakes and life events can be outweighed if we dwell on guilt, remorse, defeat, relationship failures etc. With poor self-esteem we may even view ourselves as a failure because of how we were as humans in our past.
